If you buy a towbar you will also need electrics to power the lights on your trailer or cycle carrier or a complete system to power the internal electrics in your caravan including lights, fridge, etc.

Many motor vehicle manufacturers now design into their cars electrical systems the ability for the car to recognize when a trailer has been connected. The vehicle will then alter its characteristics to help create a safe towing environment for the vehicle and its passengers. These features often require activation by the towbar fitter or the vehicles main dealer.

Benefits of a Westfalia Vehicle Specific Wiring Kit:

  • Won’t damage vehicles existing electrics
  • Peace of mind in terms of safety and reliability
  • Manufactured from high quality components
  • Easy to fit
  • Work in complete harmony with the vehicles safety systems

By-Pass

By-Pass wiring kits basically comprise of a socket, wires, a relay and some form of connecters. The relay effectively bypasses the vehicle systems, hiding the trailer or caravan completely. It uses a ‘signal’ from the vehicles lighting circuit to switch the relay and send power directly from the vehicle battery to the corresponding trailer lighting circuit.

The connecters must splice into the vehicle loom, they do not have specific plugs therefore may damage the wiring if fitted incorrectly and the vehicle warranty may be compromised.

Some vehicle manufacturers now state specifically in handbooks that trailer wiring must be vehicle specific not by-pass and must not use splice connectors.

As well as by-passing the vehicle lighting system, this type of kit will also by-pass all of the vehicles additional features! It will not automatically cut off the fog light or parking sensors, more importantly it will not allow any crucial or beneficial towing safety features that are built into the vehicle to be activated or used!!
